Site Analysis for installation

In this research project,  a design based project with the tittle of " Illusion in Architecture" will express in art installation format to prove that implement of illusion in architecture very beneficial in user experience for example :

• illusion manipulated our perception which give us different experience in a space, 
• illusion help in make building design unique and more memorable,
• illusion in architecture also creating a sense of excitement to the space.

This installation wiill take place at KBU International College, White canvas area. The installation will try to integrate with the existing structure of the site for example the column and the staircase there. 

Figure bellow have indicate the different position we stand and the view that we see in certain point. The purple spot shown where the 3 entrance door of KBU College, all door have the same width to access but from the observation, we find out that student are more tend to use the left and middle entrance compare to the right entrance. This maybe because of the left entrance was the first entrance which more nearer and convenient to access the business school of KBU College. Where the middle door is more often access by design school student.

The orange colour spot shown the few step toward from the entrance ( the square lighten tile colour area).

Because the illusion installation that i plan to create is only can view in certain point, therefore i need to pick and fix a point for the following progress. There is one question in my mind :

The view point that i  going to choose should be the middle door that people often access or to choose the right entrance door tat less people using so that i can prove after the illusion installation able to get attention by people have and changing the habit of occupant to access the right entrance.

The trend of modernist design has been with us for a while now. The rise of modernism can be trace to the late 1800s and the early 1900s where the Industrial Revolution happen. The availability of new building materials such as iron, steel, and sheet glass during the Industrial Revolution later on the introduction of the factory system and the machine, changed the whole appearance of the world and form a modernization society today. No matter where you are in the world, there is not hard to seek for modern architecture design. Does the common used of modernist design stand to better design or it just a fad that just flattening our designs for trend's sake?

Modern architecture is generally characterized by simplicity and clarity of forms without excess use of ornament. They embrace principle of "Form follow Function", which the shape of a building or object should be primarily based upon its intended function or purpose. Besides, modern architecture often use of industrially-produced materials and they prefer to the adoption of the machine aesthetic. The publishes of Le Corbusier about " Mass-Produced Housing”, he stated that “Mass production demands a search for standards.  Standards lead to perfection.” He further express that the overall stylistic unity brought about by standardized building elements would not only be more economically viable, but would also lead to a more harmonious overall urban aesthetic.

We can determine the influences abrupt growing of mass production during Industrial Revolution lead to the change of masses' aesthetic judgements toward the buildings easily  by observe the buildings around the world. The formulating design element, imitate issues, mass production housing with the widespread of modernist design in worldwide make the buildings design consistency cause building lost identity itself.

Nevertheless, the busy life in the city, everyday people are repeating same work task, walking on the same street, seeing the same scenery and live within the same environment as well as consistent and monotonous modernist architectural design makes life even awfully dull.

Perhaps we should think of some way to improve our current environment, for example to implement illusion technique into architecture. Illusion in architecture gives people more independence from objective reality, to develop the imagination, thus the opportunity to think differently. The application of illusion trick in architecture impact occupant perception toward architecture, it gives people more independence from objective reality, to develop the imagination, thus the opportunity to think differently. In fact it have been intentionally incorporated as architectural elements since antiquity.  The combination of illusion element with architectural design been prove that very beneficial in user experience, enhancing architecture form and make design unique. By this approach we believe that the implement of illusion into architecture able to create more excitement to our life.

This is an interesting and weighty topic which certainly worth more attention and discuss by people. In this research project, a design based project will express in art installation format to prove that implement of illusion in architecture very beneficial in user experience for example illusion manipulated our perception which give us different experience in a space, beside illusion also help in make building design unique and more memorable, nevertheless, illusion in architecture also creating a sense of excitement to the space.  The installation of illusion will take place at KBU International College lobby, (further description will do after the instalaltion). In addition, a attachment of video to show how the installation of illusion implement to the site and from that we can observe the reaction and interaction of user toward the installation.

Leandro Erlich’s Reflective Optical Illusion House in London

another random research result of illusion art installation...

Argentine artist Leandro Erlich was commissioned by the Barbican in London to install a version of his wildly popular optical illusion that creates the visual effect of instant weightlessness. Using a wall of giant mirrors propped against a huge horizontal print of a Victorian terraced house, visitors are free to climb and jump around as their reflections appear to move freely without the pesky effects of gravity. Titled Dalston House the piece was erected in Hackney just off Dalston Junction on a disused lot that has remained vacant since it was bombed during the Second World War.

This could be a good example of installation art, a vacant site due to bombed during the Second World War have given new value by the installation. By observe from the image, visitor enjoying  the interaction with the installation, by using the reflection of the mirror visitor can exert their creativity to fulfill their imagination to archive some supernatural post. This installation have catch the attraction of public, at the same time, it prove that the feasibility of illusion in architecture with able to make design unique, probably a better user experience?

Chapter 1 : Create a pleasant environment

As the increasing of population the demand for a habitat place make housing price run high.

Most of the people only afford to buy a small house, the limited narrow space make people feel oppressive. By using some trick of illusion to the interior, we able to enhance the quality of living.

·         Use mirrors to reflect the interior space and give the illusion of double volume space.

·         SkyCeiling : ceilings which in essence high definition images of the sky create illusory skies , bring in the natural scene into interior space which mainly promote relaxation.

We should consider using this element in the hospital especially the room for patient to add in some vitality to the room and bring in the natural scene for the patient who might

have to stay in room for therapy for a long years.

Chapter 2 : Aesthetic

Architects balance aesthetic appeal with practical through the use of optical illusions.

·    Case study 1 : Optical illusion used in Greek Parthenon to counter the effects of visual distortion by controlled and altering proportions of building elements.

·         Case study 2 : The Cathedral at Coutances was used “flying buttresses”’ structure to sustain the weight of the roof, while remaining hidden from observers inside, thus producing the illusion of weightlessness.

Chapter 3 : Bring a sense of excitement to the space

With a little addition of illusion element in our daily life give excitement to the space.

·      Infinity pool is a good example in daily life, it produces a visual effect of water extending to the horizon, vanishing, or extending to "infinity." One type spatial illusion in which the effect is impressive is where the infinity edge appears to merge with a larger body of water such as the ocean, or with the sky. Just a little change of using glass as the boundary successful makeover a typical swimming pool gives a sense of excitement. 

·         Trompe l’oeil painting: an art technique involving realistic imagery on building surface in order to create the optical illusion that the depicted objects exist in three dimensions

·       Should we adapting then illusion to improve our public space like government department which is always giving people unwelcome and depressing feeling?

Conclusion

Illusion in architecture brings a lot of benefits to the users. A little ingenuity gives different feeling to the space.

Multidisciplinary artist Damien Gilley creates sculptural installations that quickly redefine space through the use of optical illusions. By combining math with various materials including paint, masking tape, drywall, vinyl, wood, and foam core, he finds all kinds of ways to alter his viewers' perceptions of reality. The installations, which feature fake walls extending out from real walls, tape drawings, and imaginary hallways emerging off of flat surfaces, are Gilley's attempt to "reconfigure the built environment to provide alternative viewing experiences that complicate rational space."

 

The Oregon-based artist doesn't limit himself to four enclosed walls. He finds ways to travel beyond the limitations of architecture and he invites his viewers to come along for the visually intriguing experience. Each of Gilley's constructed walls are purposefully placed to react naturally with the existing interior and, from a distance, it's quite difficult to distinguish between reality and illusion. All of his deceptive, incomprehensible spaces are simply mind-blowing!

Basically i have done doing the research about illusion in architecture and categories it in few type..

But now my problem is there are lack of some standing point of me to the tittle. As my 1st proposal for learning agreement i state that my aim is to determine methods of illusions utilized in architecture and how it affect to architecture design. By that my objective is

>To understand the essential trick or theory of optical illusion.
>To examine the potential uses of optical illusion in contemporary design. 
>To investigate the impact of different element of illusions methods bring to architecture.

what should i improve to make my statement stronger?

In another hand, there is another new optional for student to choose what format to present the research project whether in a traditional writing formal or a design based project.

Lecturer have suggestion for me to try out the design based project as my tittle is illusion in architecture, there is more easy to present and make people easy understanding in a installation art or other media rather then a writing format. 

I appreciate and agree to the suggestion... but some how i have my consideration. Cause this is a very new format to the subject... there is no other senior work that can let me to have a reference.. 

I have a very rough idea to present the tittle through installation art. First, i can  use some trick of illusion to make a small space look bigger than what it is, for example by using mirror. But the cost to spend also a consideration for me... there might be a lot of mirror needed to present the work and it will be cost a lot to done the work.

Or is that i can do the space in a smaller scale model? or through 3D software? I need a long discussion before decided which method to present my research project...

Introduction

The dissertation title that i have choose is Illusion in Architecture... this topic actually was derive from some thought of me about photography. At the early stage for this assignment, i have totally no idea what topic should choose for the dissertation, and lecturer has advice us should think about your interest so from there you might get some clue for the title.

He asked us what is your interest? Photography .
What do you think about photography, why you like it? (Think) yes, i like photography because a same object that we see... by different people different angle we get different outcome. From my answer... i get a key word.. perspective of view !

Then, my brain is start to run run run... it remind me of a previous lesson in Design history. Its about the Parthenon, how the Greeks ancient use optical illusion. They built their temples so that the roof was slanted. This gave the illusion that the temple was actually standing straight. They also made the column bulge so that from a distance they would look perfectly proportioned.

Finally, i decided my tittle  : Illusion in Architecture! There are more a lot of illusion trick have been use in architecture and that is what i need to find out and analysis how the technique would help in enhancing architecture.
